Life School Training

Introduction

Life Skills Training (LST) is an evidenced-based substance abuse and violence prevention program designed to be implemented in Middle/Junior High School classrooms. Currently we implement LST into our health curriculum at both fifth and sixth grades. Students in grade 5 take health one period per six day cycle and grade 6 students take health two periods per six day cycle. In addition to helping youth resist drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, LST helps reduce violence and other high risk behaviors. LST incorporates age appropriate and culturally relevant information, facilitated discussion and structured activities. It was developed by Dr. Gilbert J. Botvin, Professor of Public Health and Psychiatry and Director of Cornell University's Institute for Prevention Research.
